KISS OF LIFE Dimensions: 36" x 19.5" x 27.5" Edition of 18 "Ancient lovers believed a kiss would literally unite their souls, because the spirit was said to be carried in one's breath." One of life's sweetest pleasures is the kiss. The romance of a kiss, the world you find yourself in when you are absorbing the nectar of your lover's lips. The feeding from the sweetness of each other's affection. Kissing is an intimate language, a personal communication of passion and love. Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote: "Where true Love burns Desire is Love's pure flame; It is the reflex of our earthly frame, That takes its meaning from the nobler part, And but translates the language of the heart." The act of kissing on another person's lips has become a common expression of affection among many cultures worldwide. It is a physical expression of affection and love between two people involving the sensations of taste, touch and smell. The vocabulary of the heart can be written with a kiss. In my Kiss of Life I wanted to depict a couple that are in the middle of a sensuous kiss without being locked in an embrace. The kiss is without expectation and with liberation, explorative and gratifying. There is no submission but a kiss given freely. One never knows how long something will last, but in this kiss the burning belief of now and in this moment is alive. The metaphor of this sculpture is not in knowing what the kiss is all about but in the poetry of their bodies and the negative space around them. The light touch of a hand, the interlocking feet, the openness of the woman and the gentleness of the man, these are the subtleties that suggest this kiss is one in which life is being given and shared. This is the Kiss of Life. "Blood of my Blood, and Bone of my Bone. I give you my Body, that we Two might be One."
