John Poe, Pat Garrett, and Thomas McKinney take a break during their pursuit of Billy the Kid. To avoid detection, the trio of lawmen would travel by night and then hide in the hills during the day. This strategy worked as they were able to make their way to Ft. Sumner, NM, undetected, arriving there on the night of July 14, 1881. Leaving Poe and McKinney on the porch of Pete Maxwell's house, Garrett entered Pete's bedroom to inquire about the whereabouts of the Kid. As the two men spoke in whispers, the Kid entered the room! Recognizing the Kid by his voice, Garrett drew his pistol and shot the young outlaw dead. |
