Calvin Allison

As a student of fine art and anthropology, Seattle-born artist, Calvin Allison refined his understanding of sculpture as a mentee of renowned sculptor, Don Scott of The Cornish Institute of Fine Arts. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the Evergreen State College, he served as assistant to eminent British sculptor, David Begbie, who introduced him to sculpting in screen and steel. This medium has inspired his ongoing exploration of from, light and line for the last 35 years.

Allison's work is one of a kind, made entirely by hand. The canvas of metal screen is unforgiving, requiring time, patience and hand-eye coordination. Then, powder coating lends the sculpture and unyielding tensile integrity to each individually signed piece.

"My work is a blend of classicism and abstraction. Sculpted screens allow me to manipulate the duality of light and dark to create contrasting illusions. My intent is to produce art that will offer pleasure to the eye through symbolic suggestion, focusing on the beauty of detail that would otherwise be hidden, providing a transportive, potentially transformative visual experience." Calvin Allison

The completed sculptures are translucent where light ripples on the surface and passes through. This creates an interactive shadow effect, casting itself upon the environment and adding to the multiplicity of the sculpture's dimensions. With each shift in vantage point, the view observes a new set of relationships. The result is a presence both real and surreal, a 3-dimentional, living, breathing work of art.

Allison's work resides in public and private collections around the world.
