At the end of the Lincoln County War, Pat Garrett was elected sheriff of the county with his one mission being to bring in Billy the Kid. Garrett and 7 men tracked the Kid and some of his pals to a lonely sheepherders hut at a place known as Stinking Springs. On the morning of December 23, 1880, Garrett and his men, after a day-long gun battle, were able to arrest Billy and his men.
